Nursery Provision at Bawdsey School

EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to children from birth to the end of the reception year. In our school, we have Nursery provision from age 2 and Reception year during the year the child turns 5. Children are admitted into the Foundation Stage in accordance with our schools nursery admissions policy and Suffolk County Council admission regulations for reception places. (Compulsory schooling begins at the start of the term after a child’s fifth birthday). Although we prefer all children to start from September term. Any part time requests have to be approved by the Headteacher and Governing body. Key stage 1 begins for our children at the beginning of Year 1.

Activities in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) are carefully planned and organised in order to provide a range of learning experiences.

Planning for each day, week and term is carried out using a topic/theme based approach, following the children’s interests and responding to specific events. Areas of Learning include Physical Development, PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development), Communication and Language, Understanding The World, Maths, Literacy and EAD (Expressive Arts and Design). None of these areas can be delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other. All areas are delivered through a balance of adult led and child initiated activities, planned with a focus on the characteristics of effective teaching and learning. Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating and Thinking Critically are all carefully considered. In each area, there are Early Learning Goals (ELG) that define the expectations for most children to reach by the end of the EYFS. We have an EYFS Class Teacher, EYFS Practitioner and Nursery Assistants within or team.

The Reception class is where the children’s thoughts and feelings about school begin and where it is so important for them to have the opportunity to build their confidence, to try new things and to enjoy learning. At Bawdsey, we wear uniform and have a school book bag, to complete the transition from Nursery to Reception. In this class we aim to create an environment where children can have a variety of experiences, particularly through play. Through this we can develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them and give them a sound foundation on which to build. They will make progress towards completion of the 17 Early Learning Goals across the 7 areas of learning outlined above.

Nursery Admissions:

Places will be available for up to 30 hours per week, partly funded by the Local Education Authority (LEA). From the term following a child’s 3rd birthday, funding for up to 15 hours will be provided by the LEA. For example, if a child was born in October 2018, this funding would become available at the start of the following term i.e. January 2022. However, if the child was to start nursery immediately after their third birthday, Bawdsey Primary School would be in a position to subsidise the period October 2018 to January 2022.

In addition, if parents / carers using our nursery class wish to exceed their funded 15 hours, we shall not request top up fees for these additional hours (up to a maximum total of 30 hours per week, including lunch.) These 30 hours will be available as 3hr sessions i.e. 5 x morning sessions 8.45am-11.45pm and 5 x afternoon sessions 12.15pm-3.15pm. Children attending the afternoon sessions can either bring a packed lunch, or a school dinner can be purchased. Application forms to secure a nursery place for up to 15 hours per week from the term following a child’s 3rd birthday are available from the school office.

Completed application forms should be handed back to the school, and these will be sent for consideration. Nursery provision and LEA funding for up to 15 hours per week can be split between providers. Places for 2 year old have to be approved by Governors in line with our admission policy. Another form will need to be completed if additional hours are required for either or both of the following: the period immediately following a child’s 3rd birthday up until LEA funding is available (the following term)/hours in excess of 15 per week.
